Scientific Name: Hydrangea macrophylla
Common Names: Big-leaf Hydrangea, Mophead Hydrangea, Florist’s Hydrangea
Maximum Height: 2 m
A shrub with a rounded growth habit, hydrangeas are able to grow up to about 1 – 2 m tall. Hydrangeas are well known because they change colour according to their pH value. When the soil is acidic, the flowers are blue or dark purple in colour. When the soil is alkaline, the flowers are pink in colour and when the soil is neutral, the flowers are white or pale green in colour.
Most hydrangeas can be grown in full sun or partial shade, however many hydrangeas do not like extremely hot conditions so place them in an area where they are shaded from the afternoon sun if placed outdoors. Hydrangeas enjoy deep watering at least once a week, especially in dry weather. An occasional boost of fertilizer may also benefit the Hydrangea in keeping a healthy bloom.
