A small compact tree, it can grow up to 5m tall.
Kumquat fruits are orange thin-skinned, juicy, golf-ball sized (about 4 cm in diameter) and is usually eaten raw with the pulp and juice being very acidic and sour. The peel is sweet. Fruit remains on the plant for a long time, taking up to one year for its fruit to ripen to orange. Each fruit contains 6-9 fleshy segments. Fragrant white 5-petaled flowers bloom primarily in spring but may produce 4-5 smaller flushes throughout the year. Leaves are oval, slightly glossy and evergreen growing to 10cm long. Leaves are aromatic.
Often seen during Chinese New Year as the common name ‘Kumquat’ is derived from the Cantonese translation ‘Gam Gat’ which means gold and luck. The plant is thus, seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
