Scientific Name: Dracaena sanderiana
Common Names: Lucky Bamboo, Curly Bamboo, Chinese Water Bamboo, Ribbon Dracaena
Maximum Height: 1 m
Able to represent all of the elements of Feng Shui, Lucky Bamboo plants are said to bring good luck and fortune, especially when given as gifts. The lucky bamboo are also able to survive in containers of pure water or well-draining soil. Although the word bamboo occurs in several of this plant’s common names, Dracaena sanderiana is of an entirely different taxonomic order from true bamboos. Also, surprisingly, it is a native African species.
The most common mistakes related to lucky bamboo plants are usually connected to the water. Chlorinated water will kill them over time, and water that is dirty or infected with bacteria can be deadly. If a plant develops black roots, the roots has to be pruned off. It is highly recommended to change the water every week with distilled or bottled water. Fallen, dead leaves should never be allowed to sit and rot in the water as they might introduce bacteria. A single drop of liquid fertilizer applied monthly is sufficient to sustain any lucky bamboo almost indefinitely.
