The Cockscomb is a herbaceous shrub of 1m maximum height. It produces showy flowers that are velvety, resembling a brain or a cock’s comb, thus its common name the “Cockscomb”. Colours range from white and yellow to shades of orange, red, and purple. Cockscomb flowers can be dried and used in floral arrangements.
The Cockscomb prefers rich and moist soils that are well-draining and require a minimum of eight hours of direct sunlight. Poorly draining soils can cause Cockscombs to develop root rot. Like other Celosias, the Cockscomb will grow in nutrient-poor, sandy soil but thrive and bloom more profusely in soil that contains high levels of organic matter.
